I totally spaced taking pictures of the ladies painting watercolors last Thursday. I will try again this coming Thursday. We did have a good time and completed some ink/pen and wash work that turned out well. I look forward to each Thursday now to teach a little and coach a little and paint a little too.
The Nampa Art Guild Show is on at the Nampa Civic Center (Until Monday at 4:00 pm). Yesterday I sat with Mike Polk, another member that loves watercolor, as hosts at the show. We had a few folks come in to look at the paintings, and we enjoyed seeing the show ourselves and making our choices. We didn't match the judge well, but when does that ever happen.
I felt fortunate to win gold ribbon in the "Advanced Gold Award" section for my acrylic of Mustang horses running through a gully. I painted much like it was watercolor, then got a little heavy with the paint on the overhanging tree. I really like the painting and the suggestions made by watered down acrylics.
Again, not a great photo of the painting, but you get the flavor.
Here are two watercolor paintings completed this week. I painted for Elder and Sister Kasteler, whom we met in Manila, Philippines. They oversaw the Missionary Recovery Center and were of great service to me when I became ill at the Philippines Iloilo Mission and went to stay at the center to see physicians. I still have not recovered and will likely not. I believe my problems were old age and fear. We came home 5.75 months early and we should have just stayed for all the good it did to come home.
Anyway, I wanted to paint something that would be a remembrance of their mission. I will probably send the one of the missionaries tracting in Culasi, Antique, Panay. I don't know how much experience kastelers had with carabao. I know they saw pictures and sculptures, but I think the carabao is more of a rural phenomenon and Manila is a huge, ultra crowded city.
I cleaned this up a bit today. It is so overworked in the mid-ground that I lightened it quite a bit and it looks much more pleasing now. I don't have an updated photo, but it is hardly important. I may paint a different offering with the same composition etc. I started one today and we shall see how it turns out. I want to get one, that I like, sent off Monday or Tuesday.
Hope somebody looks at this blog once in a while. Please feel free to comment and suggest. I am always trying to get better.
